Survey Dynamics is providing Rio Tinto’s Greater Tom Price hub survey support for their waste dump and legacy track rehabilitation projects. We are assisting with the construction of geomorphic terrain modelling and the implementation of key conformance attributes to ensure rehabilitated dumps weather and thrive over a projected 300 years, transforming the landscape. The work areas are spread across the Tom Price and Western Turner mine sites which are located within approximately a 30 minute drive from the Tom Price townsite. Surveys are essential to the project team, from initial control setup and validation of digital surfaces via drone flights, to machine control, volume calculations, and conformance reporting.
The process begins with heavy dozer bulk pushing from the tip-to-design to the reshape model. Precise trimming is then carried out throughout the dump terrain. Drainage backslopes, crest bunds, and containment bunds are constructed to enable water catchment in all the right areas. Topsoil is then spread at a consistent thickness, ensuring that the rich nutrients necessary for plant growth are available. Finally, the area is ripped and seeded with various native species to restore it to a sustainable and habitable environment.
In addition, across the Tom Price sites, various access tracks have been utilized to reach remote areas of the mine. We are supporting the contractor by generating machine files for excavators, enabling the precise restoration of the land to its original topography.
